What's the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 charging?
Level 1 uses a standard 120-volt outlet and adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour — fine for plug-in hybrids but slow for a full EV. Level 2 runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit and adds about 20–40 miles of range per hour, meaning most EVs recharge fully overnight. Nearly every new home EV installation we do in Western Chicagoland is Level 2.
Do I need a panel upgrade to install a home EV charger?
Not always. A typical Level 2 charger draws 32–48 amps, and many 200-amp panels have room. Homes on 100-amp service, older fuse boxes, or panels already near capacity from HVAC and other large loads usually need either a panel upgrade or a smart load-management device. We perform a load calculation during the on-site assessment so you know before we quote.
Where should the charger be installed?
The most common location is on the garage wall closest to your electrical panel — shorter wire runs mean lower cost. Detached garages, carports, and outdoor driveway installs are all possible; they just require weather-rated equipment and, for longer runs, larger-gauge wire. We'll walk the property with you and recommend the best combination of convenience and installed cost.
Which EV chargers do you install?
We install any UL-listed hardwired Level 2 charger, including units from ChargePoint, Wallbox, Enphase, Grizzl-E, Tesla, and the automaker-branded chargers shipped with new EVs. If you haven't picked a unit yet, we'll help you choose based on amperage, cord length, indoor/outdoor rating, and whether you want Wi-Fi and smart-scheduling features.
Do I need a permit in DuPage County?
Yes. EV charger installations require an electrical permit and a final inspection in DuPage County and every surrounding jurisdiction we serve. We pull permits, meet the inspector on-site, and handle any ComEd coordination if a panel change or service upgrade is required. Homeowners never contact the county or ComEd directly.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward Level 2 install with an accessible panel and a nearby garage location typically takes 3–5 hours in a single visit. Add a day if the panel needs an upgrade first, or if the run crosses to a detached garage. We give a firm timeline in the written quote after the on-site assessment.
Are there rebates or tax credits available?
ComEd periodically offers residential Level 2 charger and installation rebates, and the federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit can offset installation cost for eligible properties.
